Gathering

The branches seem to be not branches,
but rather a gathering
of green cups and twisting stalks
that stretch upward and outward,
heaven-bound,
as if to worship the rain.

The tree seems to be not a tree,
but rather a gathering
of shell-shaped ivy
clinging vines and grasping foliage
that hug the bark
as if to snuff out the life within.

The earth seems to be not earth,
but rather a gathering
of all things wholesome
tender soil and tiny creatures
that nourish the planet
as if to cradle life itself.
